You’ve opted for the space and energy savings provided by tankless water heating, but the decision making process is not yet over. The next big choice has plagued numerous homeowners over the years: gas or electric? Each option has its merits and neither is appropriate in all situations.
The following are a few key considerations to keep in mind as you choose between a gas and electric tankless water heater:
Cost of Operation
Most people think of gas as the more affordable option, but with tankless water heating, it’s not so clear cut. Initial costs are typically far higher for gas water heaters, in part because they are more complicated to install. High-quality gas heaters with electronic ignition systems may be even more expensive. Over time, however, those who opt for gas tankless heaters may recoup much of this cost difference, primarily because natural gas is a far cheaper input fuel than electricity.
Efficiency
Gas may be the cheaper fuel, but electric water heaters are far more efficient. A typical tankless electric water heater is 98 percent efficient, compared to just 85 percent efficiency for the latest model gas tankless heaters. This increased efficiency may offset the cheaper price of gas.
Size
Electric tankless water heaters are optimal in small homes, as they cover about one-third of the space of gas tankless heaters. Often, electric tankless heaters are installed in small closets or other hidden spaces, thereby freeing up room in the rest of the house.
Water Output
Output constitutes the greatest advantage of gas tankless heaters over their electric counterparts. Most gas tankless heaters can deliver over eight gallons per minute. Output rarely reaches this level for electric heaters, particularly if they’re based in climates where the incoming water is initially cold. Gas tankless heaters may therefore be preferable for large families with extensive hot water needs.
